Questions About Canon Temeraire Series and How the World Works:
Are Crew considered Aviators?
A: Yes, an "Aviator" is merely a term for someone enlisted in the Aerial Corps/Air Force/Armee d'Air etc. Aviator refers to anyone enlisted from an Admiral to a Cadet.
What are the different ranks in the crew and what do they do?
A: The different ranks among the crew are as follows, from lowest to highest:
1) Cadet - Usually children age 8-13, cadets are in training to become aerial officers. They help with all sorts of small tasks, including cleaning the dragons, running about the coverts to send and deliver messages, and acting as servants for their captains. Captains are responsible for schooling their cadets and ensuring they get a "proper" education.
2) Ensign (lookout, signal, runner) - Ensign is the first level of enlisted officer. They serve multiple jobs on dragons, including lookout, signalling (waving signal flags and interpreting the signals from other dragons or soldiers) or running messages up and down the dragon.
3) Bellman - Bellmen typically ride in the belly rigging of the dragon, and are responsible for shifting/packing luggage and supplies to make sure the weight is properly balanced, as well as sending and taking supplies from the topmen into the belly rigging. They also help maintain the harness during battles and do extra tasks.
4) Topman -
Bombers: As the name suggests, bombermen fling bombs at enemy dragons or, more commonly, down towards the ground at soldiers and fortifications to attack the ground forces.
Riflemen: Riflemen are in charge of fending off boarders, and firing volleys of riflefire at other dragons nearby to discourage boarding, kill enemy crew, or to create a wall of bullets allowing a dragon to retreat safely.
5) Leftenant - Leftenants, or "lieutenants" are the right-hand men of the Captains. They help make sure everything is in order and take charge whenever the Captain is not present, and do many different tasks. In the canon Temeraire series, there can be up to 3 leftenants per heavyweight dragon, but in IoD there can only be one Leftenant per dragon to avoid confusion.
Other:
6) Harness Master - The harness master focuses on crafting and maintaining a dragon's harness, cleaning it and ensuring it is supple and undamaged before each flight.
7) Surgeon - Usually only heavyweights have a dedicated surgeon - middleweights tend to use covert surgeons. Surgeons are dragon doctors, and are responsible for tending to any injuries or health problems the dragons may sustain.
What are the crew sizes for different size dragons (lightweight/middleweight/heavyweight?) in IoD?
A: Lightweight - no crew (only have a captain)
Middleweight - 3 crew and a captain
Heavyweight - 7 crew and a captain
How large are the various dragons in relation to each other?
A: Here is an image that shows a good approximation of dragon sizes! - IMAGE
You can find another size comparison sheet on the Premise page!
When is a dragon considered old, and how old is full grown?
A: Remember that in Temeraire, dragons hatch out of the shell as developed thinking and understanding creatures, as well as being able to speak with perfect grammar and pronunciation! However, they are still rather immature and learn about the world for the first year - especially in the first 5 months. In the first 1 month, dragons mostly sleep and eat, and focus on growing. Dragons are fully grown and can reproduce at 1 year of age.
Heavyweights and larger middleweights (15 tons+) can reach up to 200 years of age; most middleweight dragons live to around 150. Lightweight dragons tend to have a similar life span to humans (80-100 years).
Questions About Character Creation:
If I do the female prompt and apply for a female-only breed egg but I don't get chosen, what happens?
A: You have done the prompt, so should you apply to another female only breed egg in the future, you will not have to do the prompt again.
Can I apply for a Captain/Dragon slot with one of my already existing crew member characters?
A: Absolutely! And if you have thoroughly developed your crew member, you are more likely to get the slot if others compete with you for it.
