LIST OF DRAGON BREEDS

Below are a list of dragon breeds found in the Temeraire series and in Insurgence of Dragons, sorted by their country of origin. Several fanon breeds have added to fill out the ranks of diversity in breeds native to the Americas. (Fanon breeds marked with a *)

BREEDS NATIVE TO BRITAIN:

Winchester

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- A courier breed, weighing 5-8 tons

- Useful for dispatches, mail carrying service, and quick, harrying flank attacks

- Extremely fast flying speed, used for shorter courier routes

- Brown in color, with deep plum stripes and stipple markings; two white horns, white spikes around the jaws

Greyling

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- A small courier breed, weighing about 5 tons

- Useful for dispatches, mail carrying services and long-distance courier duty

- Capable of flying long distances quickly; generally diminished intelligence

- Light grey in color, with white dapples which allow it to blend into the cloud cover, two white horns

Grey Widowmaker

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- Weighs around 5 tons, rarely taken into harness

- Useful for dispatches, mail carrying service, and quick, harrying flank attacks

- Related to the Greyling; typically are poor tempered and aggressive, making them hard to captain

- Steel grey in color with black speckling and patches; camouflage well with clouds

Sharpspitter

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- A small breed of around 4-6 tons

- Used for quick harrying flank attacks, though the breed is rare. Some have suggested it for cavalry use.

- Capable of potent vitriolic attack, though its spray is too small to be of effective military use in the air (range only 3-4 meters).

- Bronze in color, with black banding across the wings and tail and striping in whites and blacks along the back. Two small tusks on the lower jaw for acid spray. Four small black horns atop the head, and a smaller set of spines going down the back. Related to LongWings with a snakelike head shape.

Grey Copper

Class: Lightweight

- A light combat breed, weighing 6-9 tons

- Used for harrying attacks and formation flying, as lookouts and attackers

- Grey in color, with an iridescent greenish copper shine and tabbylike markings.

Xenica

Class: Middleweight

- A small middleweight breed, weighing 10-14 tons.

- Useful for fast, powerful attacks. Has difficulty in turning.

- Will only accept female captains.

- Rich copper color with a range from yellow copper to a deep orange copper; countershaded, with a white underbelly. Midlength curving white horns, with white spines. Distinct brown-black and orange markings on the wings, similar to the Ringed Xenica and Silver Xenica butterflies.

Malachite Reaper

Class: Middleweight

- Related to the Yellow Reaper - weigh 11-14 tons

- Tend to have even temperament and significant intelligence

- Yellow-brown in color, with green highlights and green and black bands

Yellow Reaper

Class: Middleweight

- Weigh 11-14 tons; ~15 meters long - the most common of all British breeds

- Yellow Reapers tend to make up the main base of English borne fighting forces; usually fly support in formations, and have a notably even and easygoing temperament
- Slow at long distance flying, but agile enough to skirmish in the air

- Gold in color, with white mottles and occasionally darker flecks.

Anglewing

Class: Middleweight

- A middleweight breed, weighing 13-16 tons

- Oddly angled wings allow them to make sharp, unpredictable turns; extraordinarily agile and quick

- Golden brown and spotted with bright yellow - may show many different spotting patterns including mask and mantle, harlequin, or cap and saddle

Bright Copper

Class: Middleweight

- Weighs 13-16 tons

- Used for fighting in formation; have notably large air sacs, allowing them to fly long distances with notable stamina

- Exhibits a strong ridge of bone above the eyes and along the horns - small horns around the back jaw and down the spine. May display a range of colors from bright, vivid red to bright orange, to paler copper and gold. May sometimes take on a greenish aged copper iridescent shine with age.

Longwing

Class: Middleweight

- A larger middleweight breed, weighing 16-18 tons with a notably large wingspan of 120 feet.

- Capable of long range (400m) vitriolic attack, though only downwards. Often the leader of a formation.

- Will only accept female captains.

- Distinctive orange markings on a body colored in a range of blues, with the tips of the wings always being very vividly marked. May exhibit speckles, stripes, or striations. Two long tusk-like bonespurs extend from its lower jaws. Long necked, with one small pair of horn stubs. Always has savage-looking orange-amber eyes.

Parnassian

Class: Heavyweight

- A small heavyweight breed, smaller specimens fall into middleweight classes. Approximately 16-22 tons.

- Heavy combat breed used to support breath weapon dragons in fighting

- Creamy white in color, with black patches and vibrant circular black and red markings.
- Dark spines and exceptionally long, dangerous talons; unusual red eyes

Chequered Nettle

Class: Heavyweight

- Combat fighter weighing 20-25 tons

- Heavily spiked with many horns on the head and chin; viciously heavy spiked tails that can be used as morningstars for devestating blows in battle

- Gold coloured with brown mottling or markings

Regal Copper

Class: Heavyweight

- The largest known dragon breed,  weighing 35-50 tons

- Useful for breaking enemy lines and carrying large numbers of men.

- High stamina due to unnaturally large air sacs.

- Farsighted; can spot things well from far away but have difficulty reading or seeing things close by

- Vividly coloured red and gold, with multiple great horns along the head, ruff, and back, and on the nose and chin. Craggy spikes running down the back.

BREEDS NATIVE TO FRANCE:

Plein-Vite (Full and Quick)

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- An extremely small courier breed, weighing 1-2 tons

- Can fly very quickly for a short time, but with little endurance. Typically only carry one rider, and usually are harnessed to young teenager officers.

- Gold and tan colored, with vivid striations of white and deeper red browns, like tiger-eye. Four small horns, small ridge of brown horns down spine

Chasseur-Vocifere (Ferocious Hunter)

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- Weighs 3-5 tons

- A particularly good hunter, this breed is good for courier duty, hunting duty, or making vicious harrying attacks as a light combat dragon

- Deep brown in color with pale yellow and pinkish speckle and rosette markings; six small but sharp horns along the head and sharp spines down the neck, back and tail

Pou-de-Ciel (Sky-Louse)

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- A lightweight combat breed, weighing 3-5 tons

- No spines or horns, has some ridges atop the head

- Pale blue with a whiteish belly, easily blending into the sky, with darker blue and white freckle markings and sometimes, darker blue tapir markings

Roi-de-Vitesse (King of Speed)

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- A small courier breed, weighing 2-3 tons

- Useful for dispatches, and quick long distance flying for carrying messages

- A brilliant scarlet in color, with distinctive golden and light tawny striped and spotted patterns along the edge of the wings and spine.

- Head has an armored crest with small horns jutting outward, like a miniature triceratops crest (no large forward facing horns or spines on the back)

Garde-de-Lyon

Class: Lightweight

- A lightweight combat dragon, weighing 3-6 tons

- Used in formation flying, flank attacks and light skirmishing

- Deep red to burgundy in color, with a paler underbelly. Typically has six horns along a small head crest, and three spines along each jawline. No spines down the back
- Markings include blues from a pale blue shade to dark, teal blues in points patterns or in striations along the body and wings

Pascal’s Blue

Class: Lightweight

- A light combat breed, weighing 7-8 tons

- Used for light combat, formation flying and skirmishing

- Mainly blue, with white striations and piebald markings  
- Narrow head, frill of horns sprout from behind the head.

Pecheur-Couronne (Crowned Angler)

Class: Middleweight

-  The most common of the French fighting middleweights, 10-14 tons

- Typically used in formation fighting and skirmishing; versatile and typically very dedicated

- Grey, with black and white striations. May take on a light to heavy bluish tint. Long and serrated teeth, white claws.
- Shows four white horns and a ruff of spines that goes down the neck but stops at the base; visible ears

Pecheur-Raye (Striped Angler)

Class: Middleweight

- Another common French fighting middleweight, weighing 12-15 tons

- Typically used in formation fighting and skirmishing

- Main body ranges from blue-black to a vibrant cobalt blue, with white, grey, and black bands along the wings horizontally and along the face. Long and serrated teeth, similar to its relative the Pecheur-Coronne.
- Two middle-length horns and a series of white spikes down the back; visible ears

Flamme-de-Gloire

Class: Middleweight

- A middleweight breed weighing 13-16 tons

- Breathes fire at a range of 35 m and can hold for up to 3 minutes; considered very valuable to the French

- Black and vividly yellow-gold or orange in color in python whorl patterns, with reddish hints across the body and on the wings. Two heavy ram-like horns, no spines.

Papillon Noir (Black Butterfly)

Class: Middleweight

- A fighting middleweight breed weighing 13-16 tons
- Somewhat similar in body structure Flamme-de-Gloire; typically painted and used as decoys to protect the Flamme-de-Gloire in a formation

- Main body color ranges from black to a pale bluish purple. Vivid stripes in green and blue, with no spines and two large, blunt curving horns on the head.

Honneur-d’Or (Golden Honor)

Class: Heavyweight

- A heavyweight breed, weighing 18-22 tons

- Useful for breaking enemy lines due to weight and carrying large numbers of men

- Gold, barred red and blue, with a thickset body and two heavy horns on the head - ridge of armored scales along the neck, protecting the back of the neck from fatal bites

Fleur-de-Nuit (Flower of the Night)

Class: Heavyweight

- A heavyweight breed, weighing 20-25 tons

- Excellent night vision, easily blinded by bright lights such as flares or sunlight

- Useful for spying, night-time raids and maneuvers; dark colors make them extremely hard to see at night

- Dark blue or purple. Ridged, curved horns with tiny frills along the top of the head, and segmented ridged fins along the back and tail. Large milky eyes that glow at night, though not well enough to easily track while in flight.

Defendeur-Brave (Brave Defender)

Class: Heavyweight

- A heavyweight breed, weighing 19-24 tons

- Possesses a heavy, hooked tail which makes it effective at close combat

-  Either has a golden-yellow body with lush green markings, or a moss to pine-green main body with yellow and gold markings
-  Two short to middle length horns, with spines down the back

Chanson-de-Guerre (Warsong)

Class: Heavyweight

- A heavyweight breed, weighing 20-25 tons

- Useful for breaking enemy lines as well as powerful fighters; can carry large numbers of men

- Most common French heavyweight breed

- Colored shades of orange, yellow, brown, and ivory in many different patterns, with significant variation between dragons. Horns like those of Hebridean sheep.
- Head contains many horns along the top of the head, cheeks and under the eyes, as well as few on the chin. Small, flexible spines run down the back from head to tail.

Petit Chevalier (Little Knight)

Class: Heavyweight

- A heavyweight breed, weighing 25-30 tons

- Useful for breaking enemy lines as well as powerful fighters; can carry large numbers of men

- Greyish black body, striped heavily with orange, gold and pale yellows. Flecked golden.
- Four small horns, along with smaller horns along the ridge of the eyes, cheeks, chin, nose and back of the jaws. Row of small spikes down the back.

Grand Chevalier (Great Knight)

Class: Heavyweight

- A relatively rare heavyweight breed, weighing 25-45 tons. The second largest breed after Regal Coppers.

- The strongest fighters and carriers in the French arsenal.

- Colored brown, from a middling coffe to a dark reddish, orange brown with a rainbow iridescence, countershaded with a pale belly. Sometimes they have white, pale grey, or pinkish markings. Powerful jaws.
- Large nose horn, two large curling ‘kudu’ horns protruding from the back of the head, and smaller horns dotted around the jaw, horns, and protruding in a significant brow above the eyes. Spines down the back and sometimes at elbows and joints. Scales are hard and give a rocklike appearance.
- May gain a greenish tint with older age.

BREEDS NATIVE TO NORTH AMERICA:

Owela Slikslik (Wind Cricket)*

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- A very small lightweight breed, weighing 1-3 tons

- Can fly very quickly for a short time, but with little endurance. Typically only carry one rider, and usually are harnessed to young teenager officers.
- Skilled climbers and jumpers; high intelligence

- Goldish-tan, tawny, or brown colored, with vivid striations of white, gold and/or deeper red browns, like tiger-eye. Four small horns, small ridge of brown horns down spine.
- Pale underbelly, pinkish tint on wings, spines down neck but not rest of body.

Owela Shahnaksa (Wind Fox)*

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- Weighs 3-4 tons

- Particularly sly dragons, known to be fickle with preferences

- Pale reddish brown to reddish orange to dark russet in color, with distinctive black stocking marks on the legs. White underbelly and snout. Rarely these dragons can be mottled tortoiseshell orange and grey.
- A thin set of spines down the neck, has two short jagged horns and a few spines around the cheeks. Inky black eyes.

Little Dakota*

Class: Lightweight

- A lightweight combat breed, weighing 4-6 tons

- Small horns curving upward and foreward - 6 horns on head. Small ridges on back but no spines. Similar in miniature to the Dakota breed; shares the Dakota's hardiness. 

- Slender, pine green and brown dragons, with blue or reddish-burgundy markings.

Semoni*

Class: Middleweight

- A middleweight breed, 11-14 tons

- An aquatic, bright reddish-orange dragon with a silver underbelly, and fins along the spine and tail. Somewhat beaklike muzzle.

- A brilliant scarlet in color, with distinctive golden and light tawny striped and spotted patterns along the edge of the wings and spine.

- Able to breathe underwater and hold oxygen reserves for about 2-3 hours before needing a water source to breathe again. Eggs must be incubated in warm freshwater and starts life able to breathe in freshwater - by full maturation at 1 year of age, can breathe only in saltwater.

Equa Waya (Great Wolf)*

Class: Middleweight

- A smaller middleweight dragon, weighing 9-12 tons

- Unusual mane of fur sprouting from the back of the neck into a thick ruff, along the shoulders, thumb of the wings, around the ankles, and along the tail. External fur-coated ears. Two short horns, no spines. 

- Typically come in brown, white and grey colors, though very rarely are all white. Prefers colder weather.
- Particularly strong jaws, naturally live in pack-like family units in the wild. Generally good temperament and teamwork abilities.

Kwaolu*

Class: Middleweight

- A middleweight stealth or combat breed, weighing 13-15 tons

- Deep brown or black dragons speckled with white and sporting feathered wings, along with feathering around their legs and ankles. May have white or creamy underbellies or faces.

- Able to see at night and can fly and land almost fully silently, similar to owls. Large round eyes.
- Cannot carry many riders at a time without being slowed down significantly.

Nunnehi*

Class: Middleweight

-  A middleweight stealth or combat breed, weighing 14-16 tons

- Believed to be the dragon forms of the Nunnehi spirit race. These slender dragons have the unique ability to change their scales to achieve partial camouflage, against rock, sky, or foliage similar to that of a chameleon.

- Range of color is from dull brown to a bright turquoise/yellow, with occasional showing of red patches during distress. Able to change patterns at will (takes about 30 seconds to 1 minute to change scale coloration), though usually striation patterns are seen. 
- Small spiny ridge along back, and two forward facing horns as well as a smaller nose horn (similar to a Jackson's Chameleon).
- Only takes female handlers.

Uktena Usdiga (Baby Uktena)*

Class: Heavyweight

- Weighs 20-25 tons; brutal combat fighter

- Talented skirmisher; Typically prone to violence and destructive urges. Lives in the Appalachians.

- Dull bluish grey heavyweight with bright orange horns and markings and savage tusks protruding from the edge of the mouth when full-grown. When same gender members of this tribe meet, they are prone to dominance battles and slam tusks, sometimes goring each other. Bright orange eyes.
- Stout horns; spikes around chin and jaws; no back spines.
- Very few are part of tribe society due to their wild and disagreeable nature.

Dakota

Class: Heavyweight

- A heavyweight breed weighing 19-22 tons

- A hardy dragon, able to withstand both hot and cold temperatures for long periods of time, as well as going without food for long periods of time. Originates from the midwest Sioux tribes.

- Scales are a motley camo pattern of dull brown and/or green, with lurid red stripes and thick horns curved upwards and frontwards. Spikes in a ridge down back.

Stonecoat*

Class: Heavyweight

- The largest North American breed, weighing 25-30 tons when raised in domesticity. 
- Strong pale grey and white dragons with striations like that of granite and marble, sometimes with purple, gold, or pink tints. Generally peaceful temperaments. 

- Extremely tough, heavily armored scales that repel most bullet and claw attacks; poor maneuverability in the air and on ground.
 Great strength. Lore claims that a large Stonecoat once was able to move a mountain to give his people passage to safety during winter.
- Possesses armorlike, spined plates along back and shoulders - two great ridged horns sweep back from head and brow. A few spiny plates on the throat and underbelly.

BREEDS NATIVE TO SPAIN

Flecha-del-Fuego

Class: Lightweight

- A combat lightweight breed, at 7-9 tons

- Firebreather; can breathe fire at range of 30 meters and maintain flame for 1.5 minutes. 
- Fast and maneuverable, with the ability to make sharp turns

- Black body with pale white, grey or tan wings. Vibrant red/orange markings across the head and neck, shoulders, and may have red/orange patches along other parts of the body. 
- Sports two curling horns and horns above the eyebrows similar to a Kazilik.

Cauchador Real (Royal Conqueror

Class: Heavyweight

- Weighs 25-30 tons. 

- Largest of the native Spanish dragons. Generally fierce temperament.
- Able to sustain flight over long distances. 

- Black or dark brown with dark red and orange striations, paler underside to the wings and underbelly. Hooked upper mandible with a prominent bridge along the nose. 
- Four large horns with a few extra craggy horns on chin and cheeks similar to a Regal Copper, and craggy spines down the back.

BREEDS NATIVE TO OTHER AREAS OF EUROPE

Lindorm - Native to Scandinavian Peninsula

Class: Middleweight

- Middleweight combat breed, 12-14 tons.

- Improved night vision (though not as strong as the Fleur de Nuit) and can swim quite well. 
- Notably higher than average intelligence. 

- Dark brown and/or green with brighter emerald green and gold accents. Paler underbelly of tan, yellow or lighter greens. 
- Small wings; unable to maintain flight for long periods. Long tail and a long, crocodilian snout. Several small, thin spines around the back of the head.

Ironwing - Native to Russia

Class: Middleweight

- A smaller middleweight breed, weighing 9-12 tons

- Venomous bite - not fatal in dragons, but will cause excessive lethargy, dizziness, and nausea for several days. (Effect is greater on smaller dragons and lesser on larger ones). 

- Ranges from dark to pale grey, most commonly steel grey with reddish brown rusty striations and red accents. Very large and long wings with reddish markings along the edges. 

- Strong jaws, many horn stubs around the head, and large horn protruding from the forehead. Long fangs.

Mauerfuchs (Wall-fox) - Native to Prussia (Germany) 

Class: Lightweight/Courier

- A small courier breed, weighing 2-4 tons

- Used primarily for quick dispatches and as messengers

- Grasping digits on the wings allow it to climb up to and cling to rocky faces. 
- Mottled black, grey and orange in color, with the occasional golden marking. Short faced with slender, curving horns protruding from the back of the head.

Berghexe (Mountain witch) - Native to Prussia (Germany)

Class: Middleweight

- Weighs 12-15 tons. 

- Uniquely shaped narrow wings make this dragon particularly good at travelling perilous terrain and flying through violent storms. Able to evade strong gusts. 

- Good cold resistance. Pale grey and white in color, with bright red eyes and black bands along the body. 
- No horns except for a few small ones along the nose, but has thin sharp spines along the back.

BREEDS NATIVE TO THE MIDDLE EAST

Alaman - Native to Turkey

Class: Lightweight courier

-  A lightweight courier, weighing 3-6 tons. 

- Occasionally larger Alamans can be used as light combat dragons, although they are more suited to courier duty. 

- Golden or pale yellow in color with bronze and black patches. Intricate antler-like horns protrude from the back of the bed. A few small, blunted spines along the back and neck.

Akhal-Teke - Native to Turkey

Class: Middleweight

- Middleweight breed weighing 13-15 tons

- Extremely elegant and delicate looking dragon, often given to rich families as companions in Turkey. Able to perform fast and dangerous maneuvers, but bones are somewhat fragile.

- Slender black or dark grey body body and long neck with iridescent pale scales (beige, gold and silver) in pleasant looking stripes down the sides. Hooked talons and a slender face. 
- Spines are soft and flexible; two horns and three rows of jagged teeth. Long and whip-like tail with a tuft of fur at the end.

Kazilik - Native to Turkey

Class: Heavyweight

- A heavyweight breed weighing 22-27 tons

- Particularly long and serpentine for their weight
- Most potent known firebreather; able to maintain fire for 5 minutes and have a range of 70 m. 

- Rich red scales with green and black leopard-spot markings. Two huge black horns on the head and covered in long, thorn-like spines that spout hot steam, keeping the Kazilik hide consistently moist. Violet underbelly.

- Typically have violent and warmongering temperaments. 
- Heavy-set head with powerful jaws and large teeth.
